Planning estimate: Actual material requirements depend on your fence layout, soil conditions, local building requirements and supplier specifications.
How to Calculate Fence Materials
A wood fence material estimate starts with the total fence length, post spacing and gate openings. Gate openings are removed from the portion that receives fence materials.
The number of fence sections is calculated by dividing the net fence length by the selected post spacing and rounding up. Posts are then calculated from the sections, with additional reinforced posts allowed for gate openings.
Picket quantities depend on the actual picket width and the gap between boards. A waste allowance is added to account for cuts, damaged material and installation adjustments.
